FROM THE VICE-CHANCELLOR

The natural disasters in many parts of Australia have understandably affected us all. As a former medical practitioner in rural communities, I appreciate how the kindred spirit to rebuild is alive and strong within these devastated communities and, like so many others, the Bond community has come forward to help. In January, the University provided a $10,000 donation to the (Queensland) Premier’s Flood Appeal and we raised more than $18,500 from staff, students, alumni and friends of the university to support affected students, our sustainable development students continue to volunteer with architects and engineers doing assessments, and many staff have personally volunteered their time to help with the clean up. The road to recovery will be long, but the Bond community is committed to assisting; however we can.

I was pleased to welcome our first Architectural Studies students this semester and thank benefactor Mr Soheil Abedian and his wife Anne for making a personal visit to meet with and inspire them. The students took the opportunity to showcase their first pieces of assessment.
The results of the recent Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) report were most pleasing with highly positive feedback for our university. The Australian Financial Review even commented that our Business and Management research efforts are rated equal 4th in Australia – an outstanding result for a small and young university. Whilst our focus is, and must be, on the ‘quality student experience’ with an emphasis on small classes, academics and facilities, the nexus between teaching and research is well established. We will use this latest report to plan the next stage of our ‘quality’ journey as a leading international university in Australia.

In other great news, and following the highly commendable results of the 2010 Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA) audit, Bond has been selected by AUQA as the international exemplar of Internationalisation of the Curriculum. International university colleagues are now looking to Bond’s description of good practice to model their approach to teaching their international students and preparing all students to contribute to the global society.
I am confident that the vast majority of the Bond community understand only too well that such positive outcomes continue to build upon and enhance our reputation as a leading international institution.

Regards,
Professor Robert Stable
Vice-Chancellor and President

Bond alumni are committed to providing assistance to current Bond students so that they can undertake a range of experiences to further their studies and career aspirations. The Alumni Sponsored Travel Grants are to help students fund opportunities related to their studies and future career.

The grants are intended for students who have opportunities but would not be able to undertake these opportunities without financial assistance.

The first round of grants commence in Semester 2 and we'd like to thank our generous alumni community for giving back to their University and helping our students bring their ambition to life.

FIRST GRADUATES FOR SCHOOL OF HOTEL, RESORT & TOURISM MANAGEMENT
The leaders of tomorrow in the hotel, resort and tourism industry have entered the workforce after the School of Hotel, Resort and Tourism Management had their inaugural group of students graduate on Saturday, February 12.  The School was established within the Faculty of Business in 2009 after a growing demand for graduates with the skills, abilities and drive to succeed in high level management roles in the industry.

After the graduation, seventy-five attendees celebrated the occasion as well as the School’s second birthday at a sunset cocktail reception at the ADCO Amphitheatre at Bond University. Attendees included graduates, current students, the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of Bond University, as well as key industry personnel.

Guests enjoyed mingling and networking over drinks and canapés by the lake. The graduates were also inducted into the School of Hotel, Resort and Tourism Management’s Hotel and Tourism Society.

All our graduates are on their way to the top with several securing highly sought-after internships and others gaining employment in prestigious companies.

GOLD COAST TO BENEFIT FROM LEADING SUSTAINABILITY RESEARCH
Bond University is partnering with the Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) to better facilitate the management of sustainable coastal living and urbanisation.

The GCCC has committed its support to the appointment of a Professor of Sustainable Development and Design, providing critical funding and industry links to forge the Gold Coast's reputation as world-leading educators and researchers in sustainable development.

The appointee will provide academic and research leadership within the Institute of Sustainable Development and Architecture while also participating in community affairs and forging strong relationships with industry, government and key stakeholders.

Bond University's Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Stable said the support from the GCCC was significant in terms of information sharing, regional growth and research breadth.

"I am delighted that the Council has chosen to support local researchers and educators and students," he said.

"This partnership will open the doors for many years to come for a great number of Gold Coast residents and business owners, students, and council members. It will provide access to the latest, innovative research and state-of-the-art facilities, and world-leading academics, and will enable us to strive for the same goal of making our city sustainable.

"The Institute of Sustainable Development and Architecture already attracts a world-wide audience from the likes of AA, PRATT and the World Bank - all interested to see how the professors behind Australia's first six-star Green star rated designed building are looking at other global issues such as coastal management, urbanisation, infrastructure management and sustainability science.

"We aim to be the leaders in sustainable education. It is encouraging that we have the support and commitment of our local government and community to help us achieve that," he said.

Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke said the partnership would enhance the city’s reputation for leading-edge knowledge and research into sustainable development.

“The city already has a range of initiatives to make us more resilient in the face of climate change,” said Councillor Clarke.

Councillor Clarke said the benefits of the partnership will be two-fold.

“This partnership, along with one already in place with Griffith University, will provide a quality experience for students and long-term benefits for the city.

“It will add significantly to the body of knowledge and expertise which will help ‘future-proof’ our city, through a more sustainable economy and environment.

Furthermore, Councillor Clarke said the partnership will play an important part in the Council’s overall climate change strategy.

“Our Climate Change strategy addresses both mitigation and adaptation, we are working to green the city, improve flood protection and emergency response and diversify our economy.

“That will have direct benefits for our whole community,” he said.

MUMBAI CALLING: BOND STUDENTS MOOT INTERNAITONAL CITIZEN CASE
Bond University mooting team competed in the coveted D.M. Harish Memorial Government Law College International Moot Court Competition in Mumbai, India, recently.

After many late nights and weeks of preparation, the team faced their competition head on, competing against Universities including New York University, Columbia University and University of Melbourne.

The team made it to the quarter finals, grateful for the multi-cultural experience of this competition, which enabled the students to fine-tune their advocacy skills alongside more than 16 international teams.

Bond University Assistant Professor and one of the team coaches, Jodie O’Leary said the competition and mooting process helps students develop exceptional legal and negotiating skills.

“This competition provides a unique opportunity for students to meet other law students from around the globe to practice their legal skills and be judged by leading jurists, including judges from India’s Supreme Court and Bombay’s High Court, as well as other barristers, solicitors and professors,” said Assistant Professor O’Leary.

“Mooting also teaches students the art of advocacy. They learn how to persuasively argue their position both orally in front of questioning judges and in writing through the submission of memorials. They also hone their research skills to the point that they become experts on a particular area of law,” she said.

Team member and second year law student Jacqueline Hagger found the case study to be an exciting challenge.

“In essence, the case study was about conflicting citizenship laws in two fictional countries and different domestic laws regarding a surrogacy contract. Legal proceedings around this matter were pursued and consequently the issue was taken to the International Court of Justice,” said Jacqueline.

“While it was quite complicated the challenge was very motivating for the team.”

Under the guidance of academic and student coaches, the team conquered the gruelling preparation process, which included submitting memorials and engaging in a large number of practice moots, all while being reviewed by various judges from the Faculty of Law.

The D.M. Harish mooting team comprised of Bachelor of Laws students Jacqueline Hagger and Katherine Richards. Assistant Professor Jodie O’Leary accompanied the students on their travels to India.
