FROM THE VICE-CHANCELLOR

The year 2010 saw the continuance of an era of growth and achievement that I am immensely proud to have been a part of.

Our research productivity has gone from strength-to-strength, with research and consultancy income reaching record heights (in excess of $5.5 million) and we have seen Bond University consistently feature in international headlines throughout 2010. It has been pleasing to see the University’s research culture flourish and I look forward to continuing this focus in 2011.

Last year also saw the establishment of the Institute of Sustainable Development and Architecture, including our new Soheil Abedian School of Architecture, along with the refurbishment of the main library, extension of the Law Faculty and BUELI building and the official opening of the Neil Balnaves Multimedia Centre – a truly wonderful facility for Bond, as evident by its enormous popularity with our students.

We were also recognised externally for our great work, with two independent assessments – the 2011 Good Universities Guide and the Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA) audit – affirming we are achieving our goal of providing an internationally focused and personalised education.

Such great results are due to the tireless efforts of all staff, students, alumni, benefactors, business partners and the wider Bond community and I would like to thank each and every one of you for your role in our success.

Regards,
Professor Robert Stable
Vice-Chancellor and President

PREMIER'S FLOOD APPEAL
As you may be aware, significant areas of Queensland in Australia have been devastated by floods.

On Wednesday 19th January, 2011, Bond University held a Queensland Flood Appeal Day to raise funds for those families who have been impacted.  These fundraising activities raised an amazing $15,296.80, which is a fantastic effort. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the appeal.

In addition to these fundraising activities, Bond University has also made a $10,000 donation to the Premier's Flood Appeal.

On behalf of the Bond University community, we extend our condolences to those alumni, staff, students and friends who have been affected by these tragic floods. Our thoughts are very much with all those affected.

OUR AWARD WINNING TEAM
Bond's newly established Institute of Sustainable Development and Architecture is already making a name for itself in industry circles with its students dominating recent award ceremonies by leading industry bodies the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA).

Students Jon Cover, Cassandra Perrett and Hayden Allsop have secured three of only ten Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Australian quantity surveying bursaries available nationwide, which will provide them with $3,000 towards their education and an invaluable four-week work placement.

A team of postgraduate students has also been recognised at the recent PIA awards, outperforming professional teams from respected urban planning consultancies and state and local government.

Master of Urban Planning students Greg Betts, David Copray, Jonathan Leishman and Michael Zissis received three awards for their Cross-border regional planning: coastal Queensland and New South Wales project, including the prestigious PIA Queensland Award for Excellence in Regional Planning.

The accolades continued to roll in across the University, with Hotel, Resort and Tourism Management PhD student Laurina Yam awarded one of only two national scholarships by peak industry group the Tourism & Transport Forum for her research into attracting and retaining employees in the hospitality sector.

Congratulations also go to Professor Patrick Keyzer from the Law Faculty who was shortlisted for the Australian Human Rights Commission’s 2010 Human Rights Law Award. Professor Keyzer's nomination recognised his communication to the United Nations Human Rights Committee that resulted in Australian legislation allowing for the preventive detention of high risk offenders being found in breach of international human rights law.

The Symposium attracted the top CFS researcher from America amongst the 30 top scientists in the field and created national headlines, with coverage across all major online news channels including World News Australia.
