 Welcome to the final issue of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Newsletter for 2010.
I am pleased to be able to share with you the many success stories from within our Faculty this semester. 2010 has been another fantastic year of achievements for the Faculty with the launch of the Centre for Autism Spectrum Disorder, the first annual BUFTA Masterclass, the completion of our online student showcase and numerous research grants awarded to our academic staff.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all graduating students the best of luck with their future endeavours. I would also like to thank everyone for their support and dedication throughout 2010 and wish you all a very happy festive season and a prosperous new year.

YOUNG FILM MAKERS RECOGNISED AT THE BOND UNIVERSITY FILM & TELEVISION AWARDS
|
 Australia’s next generation of filmmakers have been recognised at the 14th Annual Bond University Film and Television Awards (BUFTA).The short film competition for high school students attracted a record number of almost 100 entries nationally this year with finalists coming from all over Australia to attend the Gala Award Ceremony on November 26. | |

 The Faculty extends its congratulations to all students who received awards at the May semester Dean’s Awards Ceremony held in the Cerum Theatre on 8th October. A special mention goes to Dr Terry Goldsworthy, who received the Excellence in Learning and Teaching Award for 2010.

DR CAITLIN BYRNE RECEIVES CDP RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
|
Assistant Professor of International Relations, Dr Caitlin Byrne was recently selected as a Research Fellow for the Centre on Public Diplomacy (CPD) at the University of Southern California. Caitlin’s research topic was one of three proposals chosen by the CPD to significantly contribute to public diplomacy research at USC.
The fellowship will commence this year and be completed in 2012. During this time, Caitlin will contribute two papers to the University of Southern California’s online publication “Perspectives on Public Diplomacy” with the assistance of a research intern from USC. Caitlin will also travel to USC in 2011 and 2012 to present as a guest lecturer under the Centre on Public Diplomacy. | |

BOND UNIVERSITY ADVANCES THROUGH FIRST ROUND OF MOBILE GAME CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT COMPETITION

 Associate Professor of Multimedia and Computer Games, Dr Penny De Byl is joining this new revolution of gaming ensuring Bond’s students are well equipped for their future careers.
Penny submitted a curriculum proposal as part of the Unity Technologies Great Education Giveaway, which outlines her plan for a subject to be offered under the School of Communication and Media giving students an opportunity to learn about materials centred on mobile and tablet PC development.

MASTER OF JOURNALISM STUDENT RECEIVES PRIME MINISTER’S PACIFIC AUSTRALIA AWARD
|
 Master of Journalism student Rejinal Dutt is among the inaugural recipients of the PMPA Award provided by AusAID under the Australia Awards initiative.
The PMPA Awards target leaders and future leaders in the Pacific and offer practical work placements to high-achieving recipients of development scholarships. The placements give recipients experience and insight into the daily management of an Australian business organisation and complement their postgraduate academic experience with on-the-job training.

BOND ALUMNUS REPRESENTS AUSTRALIAN YOUTH AT THE SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO
|
 Former Young Queenslander of the Year for 2009 and Bachelor of International Relations and Law and Master of Journalism graduate, Mr Chiu-Hing Chan was recently appointed by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) the Australian Youth Representative to the Shanghai World Expo.
Originally nominated by the Queensland government for the position, Chiu-Hing is the Vice Chairman of the Australian Chinese General Chamber of Business and was recently reappointed as an executive member for the 2012 London Olympic subcommittee of the Queensland Olympic Council. | |

INTERN PROFILE: SERIOUS GAMES IN BEIJING
|
 Master of International Relations student Charles Moore is currently undertaking a 2 month internship with Kabam, a social gaming company located in Beijing, China.
Charles arrived in Beijing in late September and said that experiencing the Chinese lifestyle and working environment were some of the many reasons why he chose to do an internship in China.

 On Friday 17th September, Bond University hosted the English Australia Conference dinner on campus where over 300 English language professionals from around the country met to close their successful 2010 conference.
