| FROM THE DIRECTOR |
|
It gives me great pleasure to update the Bond community about the outcomes of a number of projects accomplished in the last six months. The success of these projects is due to the perseverance of not only the Information Services staff, but also everyone else who contributed across the campus. The credit also goes to the ICT Governance Board, led by Professor Garry Marchant, for its support and oversight of ICT projects. The following projects were concluded in recent months:
- The new data centre – launched in November 2007
- Fast Loans Service – students can now borrow books using a self-service facility in the Main Library
- The anti spam and anti virus appliance, Ironport - This new service has almost completely stopped the amount of spam staff and students received daily.
- Student IT Account creation - Students are now able to use the self-serve function to generate their IT accounts
- Bond Alumni Portal (iModules) - Bond Alumni portal was launched on 25th Feb ’08 to Bond Alumnus and staff. A web-based service that manages online communities.
- Contact Management System (Law Faculty) - A new database of organisations, legal firms, schools and relevant contacts was created using the existing CRM system (Goldmine). This new database will assist the Law Faculty in event management, marketing and assist Law graduates to contact legal firms for enquiries and employment opportunities
- CallXpress Upgrade – staff can now receive voice mail in their Outlook inbox
- iLearn Data Feeds – A scalable and robust program designed to send student enrolment and faculty information to iLearn in a timely and efficient manner
- A number of ICT upgrades to learning spaces – including the Moot Court, Entropy Room, HSM Clinics, HSM teaching spaces
- iLearn upgrade – We upgraded Blackboard from version 7.0 to 7.3 over the Christmas break. The new version will provide much enhanced functionality for staff and students, including enhanced discussion boards and improved grade book facility.
- E*Value – A healthcare management solution for the Faculty of HSM to administer and manage the clinical rotation component of its medical program
- Sedona – A web application that allows faculty to maintain their own teaching, research and service records, capture and document academic information and generate reports which are vital components in the School of Business’ application for accreditation through the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business)
We are working on many projects, some of which are of high strategic importance to the University. These include:
- Student One Upgrade
- CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system
- Enterprise Content Management System and Intranet
- Multimedia Learning Centre
- Digital signage
Information Services received a number of accolades in recent times, one of which is the recognition of our blog, L Files as an innovative tool to communicate with our customers.
Bond University was recently represented at the national VALA Conference (Victorian Association of Library Automation) in Melbourne with a paper written by Wendy Abbott and Mark Sutherland and presented by Wendy Abbott on Transforming the Library for the New Millennium. The conference was attended by over 1,000 delegates. Peta Hopkins also gave a presentation on Web2.0 social media technologies at a pre-conference workshop.
I will be on leave from Bond University from mid April to mid October, working for a new private university in Istanbul, Turkey to help them set up their Information Services. In my absence Information Services will be in good hands with Wendy Abbott as Acting Director.
