Welcome to the December 2007 edition (our last edition for 2007) of FRONT RUNNER, a newsletter dedicated to informing you about the academic, research and community activities of Physiotherapy, Exercise Science, Sports Management and Sports Science within the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine at Bond University.
2007 has been an outstanding year for Bond University. We have successfully launched our Exercise Science, Sports Science, Sports Management and Physiotherapy programs. In 2008 we look forward to welcoming more new students into our programs, including the students who will enter the new Master of Sports Science program.

NEW: BACHELOR OF LAWS/BACHELOR OF SPORTS MANAGEMENT
|
Starting in January 2008 is the new combined degree, Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Sports Management. This program is multi-disciplinary with students taking subjects from the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine, Faculty of the Law and the Faculty of Business, Technology & Sustainable Development. The standard program can be completed in 11 semesters (less than four years) and is intended to position graduates for high end positions in managing support.

NEW MASTER OF SPORTS SCIENCE 2008
|
The new Master of Sports Science has a strong focus on high performance science and the elite athlete. Entry requirements for this new and exciting program include a relevant undergraduate degree in Sports Science or Exercise Science or Human Movement Studies or Physiotherapy and a strong academic performance in those undergraduate degrees.

EXERCISE - THE NEW MEDICINE?
|
With the increasing focus on exercise as a therapeutic prescription, we could see more students using the Bachelor of Exercise Science as their preparatory Bachelor degree program before enrolling in a graduate entry medicine.
By enrolling in the Bachelor of Exercise Science degree at Bond University you will get significant preparation in the Biomedical Sciences (Cell Biology, Physiology (3 subjects) Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Anatomy (2 subjects), before moving onto the complex subjects in Exercise Science, such as Physiology of Exercise I, Physiology of Exercise II, Biochemistry Exercise, Clinical Exercise Testing, Exercise Prescription and Practice, Metabolic Diseases and Exercise and Physiological Principles of Rehabilitation.

HEADS OF SCHOOL MEETING
|
On 15-16 November, the Heads of School / Programs / Disciplines of Exercise Science, Sports Science and Human Movement Studies from over 20 universities around Australia met at Bond University. The meeting hosted by the Faculty of Health Sciences & Medicine, covered the important topic of accreditation of academic programs and the processes and procedures for becoming an accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP). | |

STUDENTS GO BLIND
|
Recently students and staff involved with Bond's Physiotherapy, Exercise Science and Sports Science programs ate dinner and socialised blindfolded to gain insight into vision impairment. The aim of the evening was to encourage students to experience vision impairment so they deepen their empathy and understanding of persons with vision impairment.

SPORTS PRESENTATION EVENING
Bond University students access many benefits including small class sizes, state of the art facilities, and committed and quality teaching staff. Sports Science students have the opportunity to test their skills and knowledge on elite athletes and then present their findings to key industry contacts.
This year we hosted the first Sports Science Presentation Evening where 8 students presented their experimental work in both poster and oral presentation formats. The evening was attended by Mayor of the City of Gold Coast, Mayor Ron Clarke, along with representatives from the Gold Coast Blaze, Queensland Academy of Sport and the Brisbane Broncos.
