IN PROFILE

JULIEN WELL SET UP FOR A CAREER IN THE U.N.

JulienBachelor of International Relations Alumnus Julien Pellaux has all the right ingredients for a career with the United Nations: Born in Switzerland, he studied his Bachelor degree in Australia, undertook an internship with the Brazilian consulate, completed his final semester as an exchange student in the USA and, since graduating in May 2002, has lived in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and New York.

Julien originally came to Bond for one semester as a Study Abroad student in 2000 but decided to stay on and complete his whole degree here once he realised that he could graduate in just two years.

Enjoying every advantage of living on the Gold Coast and near the ocean, he threw himself into campus life and became involved in a host of activities, such as the Humanities Students Association and serving as Director of International Students. In this role, he particularly came to appreciate the international mix of students at Bond, which prepared him well for his future career journey.

"The world becomes much smaller and accessible once you meet people from all continents in one place," he said.

And the world has certainly been a small place for Julien since he left our shores.

Heading home to Geneva after his Bond graduation, Julien continued his studies at the Graduate Institute for International Studies where he completed his Masters of International Relations, specialising in history and international politics, supported by a thesis on cultural globalisation.

He also took his first foray into the world of the United Nations, participating in the internship program at the UN Conference on Trade and Development in Geneva.

This led to his acceptance into the UN Volunteers program with his first posting after graduation being Kyrgyzstan where he served as Communication and Advocacy Officer for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

Working in partnership with the Kyrgyz government, he gained experience in developing public information campaigns and communication materials, as well as learning to speak Russian!

The following year, Julien was sent to Tajikistan as a UN Coordination Specialist, providing support to the UN Resident Coordinator on issues of interagency cooperation, aid effectiveness and communication.

Now living in the very different world of New York City, Julien works within the inner circle of the worldwide agency as a Communication Analyst in the Office of the UNFPA’s Executive Director where he is involved with speech writing and communication strategies for the executive leadership group.
