ACHIEVEMENTS AND ACCOLADES
|
|
Our achievements and accolades this month range from MBA students representing Australia on the world-stage in global business planning competitions to Law staff and students contributing to the successful petition for a re-hearing of Graham Stafford's case to try and overturn his 16-year-old murder conviction. We also recognise the efforts of Mrs Dee Leadbetter, Professor Patrick Keyzer and students Bridie Jabour, Sarah Flomersfeld and Jessica Golding.
Bond Law is a step closer to becoming the first Australian university to work on a successful miscarriage of justice case, after the case of Graham Stuart Stafford was referred to the Queensland Court of Appeal for re-hearing by Queensland Attorney General Kerry Shine. The Law School played a significant role in Mr Stafford’s defence team that put forward the petition for a re-hearing to the Attorney General. The 30,000 word petition seeks to overturn Graham Stafford’s 16-year-old conviction for the murder of 12 year old Leanne Holland. The petition is the culmination of 18 months work by Law Faculty Senior Teaching Fellow Joe Crowley and a dedicated team of Bond University law students: Dylan Wiltermuth, Katrina Low, Jess Kerr, Ali Eather, Jessica Willard, Nina Sultz, Harry Kinkead, Michael Truce and Eidan Havas. All should be congratulated on their dedication and hard work. The matter is expected to be heard by the Court of Appeal in four to six months time.
Bond EMBA students Richard Brimblecombe, Craig Duncan and Alexander Healy competed in the Semi Finals of the New Venture Championship in Portland, Oregon, last weekend. The team was a strong contender and represented the University well. The competition was great preparation for the group in the lead-up to the Global Moot Corp International Competition, which will be held at the University of Texas next month. The team won the right to represent Australia at the world’s most competitive business planning contest after winning the national titles in Sydney in December 2007. We wish them all well for their next challenge.
Mrs Dee Leadbetter, an Administrative Officer within Operations and Commercial Services, celebrated 20 years of employment with Bond this month. We congratulate her on reaching this milestone, and thank her for her loyalty, dedication and hard work over the years.
Deputy Dean (Curriculum and Students) in the Faculty of Law, Professor Patrick Keyzer has published his 18th monograph, Offshore Processing of Asylum Seekers: The Search for Legitimate Parameters. The book, which Professor Keyzer co-edited with former colleagues Sam Blay and Jennifer Burn, investigates and highlights the legitimate parameters for the restriction of the inflow of claimants to refugee status. Professor Keyzer’s research for this book was funded by a Discovery Grant from the Australian Research Council. He is presently completing a second monograph for this Discovery Project that compares and contrasts the approaches used for maritime interdiction and interception of asylum seekers by the Australian Navy and the United States Coast Guard.
Congratulations to our John Burton Cadetship Scholarship student Bridie Jabour who participated in the Prime Minister's Australia 2020 Ideas Summit at Parliament House, Canberra, on April 19 and 20. Well done also to 19-year-old Sarah Flomersfeld, who participated in the 2020 Youth Summit, held in the lead-up to the Australia 2020 Summit. Sarah was assigned to the Australia’s Future in the World group, where she pushed the agenda for students to learn foreign languages at school.
Well done to Sports Management student, Jessica Golding (pictured top) who will drive the third Synergy Motorsports Spectrum in the Ford Genuine Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship. Jessica is the only female to take part in the drive. |
