BOND COLLEGE GRADUATES MOVE TO UNIVERSITY
Seven students from Bond College’s first intake have begun their undergraduate studies here in first trimester 2008. The inaugural Bond College graduation was held on Friday, February 1. Students are studying a variety of degrees including Criminology, Law, Property and Sustainable Development, and Business.

CERUM THEATRE PACKED FOR DEAN's AWARDS
|
Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Prof. Raoul Mortley, AO, welcomed a great turnout of families, winning students and staff for the February 1 Dean's Awards Night in the Cerum Theatre. Master of Ceremonies was Head of the School of Social Sciences Phillip Fourie. Photos taken by Mike Grenby can be found via the Humanities Students' Association website link.
The awards were for students who came top of their classes during the September 2007 semester, also for those who made the Dean's List and Vice-Chancellor's List of Academic Excellence.
Award-winning journalist and commentator Adrian McGregor presented the Australian Press Council award for academic achievement in Journalism to Katrina Jones. The Gold Coast Business News award for upholding graduate attributes in Journalism went to Dane Moores.
Marcus Wells of Photon VFX Pty Ltd presented his company's award for academic achievement in Film and Television to David Mace-Kaff.
Yoyo Tung from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office presented prizes for outstanding achievement in the Chinese Language. Winners were: academic achievement in Chinese Language, Ben Watkins; upholding graduate attributes, Zitian Shen. Academic achievement in Chinese Studies, Sarah Rohrbach; upholding graduate attributes, Matthew Hooper.
Dr Vicki Bitsika presented the Secret Sanctum Counselling and Behaviour Management award for academic achievement to Barbara Stewart. Duane Taylor presented the Scentual NRG prize for academic achievement in Counselling and Behaviour Management to James Champion.
Virginia Balmain of the United Nations Association of Australia (Qld) presented the International Relations awards: for upholding graduate attributes, to Fabia Lonnquist; for academic achievement, to Gene Goodwin.
Associate Dean Jeff Brand presented four Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia prizes. The first two were in Communication: for upholding graduate attributes, to Nikia Shepherd; for academic achievement, to Elpiniki Pantges. The second two were in Multimedia Design and Computer Games: for upholding graduate attributes, to Anna-Lise Rosendahl; for academic achievement, to Kyle Willebrands.
Assistant Prof. Mike Grenby presented the Mandy Grenby Public Speaking prizes: for most improved student, to Sarah McMurtrie; for academic achievement, to Jonathan Dombrowski.
The Provisual Australia Film and Television Award went to Cameron Edser.
Dr Wayne Petherick presented the Behavioural Science Research Company awards: for upholding graduate attributes, to Joseph Diaz III; for academic achievement, to Michael Stewart.
Berenice Etournaud presented the Bond University Latin Society Spanish language prize for academic achievement to Rachel Thomas. The Latin Society also sponsored the prize for academic achievement in French Language, won by Mahi Jain.
Lynne Riley of the Australian Federation of University Women (Gold Coast) presented the Sybil Vise AM award for achievement in BA or MA to Mercedes Ramsey.
Prof. Mortley presented the Maree Hall Memorial Prize for academic achievement in Philosophy to Ryan Heckscher.
Associate Professor Maria Hopwood presented the Public Relations Institute of Australia awards: for upholding graduate attributes in Public Relations, to Teresa Izquierdo; for academic achievement, to Yukari Iwasaki.
Dr Beata Webb and Dr Masanori Matsumoto sponsored the prize for academic achievement in Applied Linguistics: Dr Webb presented it to Lu Wang.
Prof. Mortley presented the Faculty's Education award for upholding graduate attributes to Zheng Zhang. |

WINNERS CONGRATULATED ON SPEECHES IN JAPANESE
|
Four students in Japanese Studies have been congratulated by Prof. Raoul Mortley for their success in the Gold Coast and Queensland State annual Japanese speech competitions held at Griffith University. They are now preparing with Dr Masako Gavin (right) for the 2008 competition.

SUE GWILLIAM IS NOW FACULTY HR & STAFF DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR; SANDRA ROBB JOINS DEAN’s STAFF

Dean Raoul Mortley has announced that Sue Gwilliam is now Staff Development and Human Resources Coordinator for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. "Sue is working closely with Faculty Finance Manager Kevin Jih on HR matters and is responsible for looking after all adjunct staffing appointments," Prof. Mortley said.

FOUR J-DAYS WERE RUSHED BY BUDDING JOURNALISM STUDENTS
|
About 100 budding reporters attended four J-Days in February and March to get the inside story on Journalism as a career.
The full-day sessions included a lecture on the role of journalists in different media, a news writing workshop, a guest lecture from a Gold Coast Bulletin journalist, and an afternoon of television news reading using the autocue facilities in the campus TV studio.

Prof. Paul Wilson has been appointed to the list of experts for the International Criminal Court (ICC) as a consultant in forensic psychology and criminology. The court only appoints experts after a thorough and comprehensive vetting process.

Dr Anne Cullen, Associate Dean and Head of the Humanities School at Bond, and Dr Stuart Murray, are celebrating the release of their new 224pp book of 34 case studies from Oxford University Press, a companion volume for The Globalisation of World Politics, by Patricia Owens, John Bayliss and Steve Smith, 4th edition, 2008. | |

At her PhD confirmation on Thursday, March 20, Amber McKinley-George presented her research regarding her topic “An Examination of Clearance Rates and Homicide Solvability in Australia”. Her supervisors are Prof. Paul Wilson and Assistant Prof. Wayne Petherick.

ANIMAL INSTINCTS FILM WINS IN WOLLONGONG AND SEATTLE
|
Cameron Edser and Michael Richards, Directors of the Bond-produced graduation film Animal Instincts, have collected prizes at two more film festivals. On March 28 they were presented with the Thomson Young Innovator of the Year Award at the opening night of the National Film Festival for Talented Youth held in Seattle.

WHAT A WEIRD AMAZING RACE, THIS BONDY 500!

While standing at Surfers Paradise bus depot on Sunday March 9, I realised that it was no ordinary day. While it's true that an 'ordinary' experience in Surfers is sometimes rather extraordinary, Sunday was a scene that would stop traffic and startle many in their paths.
Around the corner, through the car park and dodging a police car came a trail of dead brides, cannibals, 'hobos', pit stop workers and many other strange groups of young Bondies competing in the Bondy 500 this first trimester.

Teaching Fellow Susie Ting is assessing 13 keen teams comprising a total of 55 students in two Advertising subjects this semester 081. Teams of two to five are competing to present their potential campaigns for Bond's Study Abroad program.

Bond Psychology Professor Richard Hicks is attending two conferences during a three-week overseas trip. The first is the annual convention of the California Psychological Association, April 3-6 at Disneyland Hotel, Anaheim.
DIABETES STUDY SEEKS ADULT VOLUNTEERS
Dr Kavita Kasana from the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine (phone 07 5595 4432) is seeking volunteers with type 2 diabetes to participate in a research study. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and willing to undertake a directed exercise program (mainly walking) for 12 months.

STOP PRESS: JOURNALISM STUDENT BRIDIE JABOUR SELECTED FOR 2020 SUMMIT
Congratulations to Bond's John Burton Cadetship Scholarship student Bridie Jabour, cadet at the Gold Coast Bulletin, who has been selected as a participant in the Prime Minister's Australia 2020 Summit. The summit is being held in Parliament House, Canberra, on April 19 and 20.
