LAW/ IR GRADUATE CHAD SNAPS UP COVETED DEFENCE POSITION
In just a few short months since graduating from Bond with a double degree in Law and International Business, Chad Burnell has made his way into the halls of power.
Late last year, Chad was accepted into the 2008 Graduate Program offered by the Defence Materiel Organisation where he is now involved in helping to formulate the Australian Defence Department’s procurement framework and shaping the interface between defence and industry.
Having successfully completed the International Baccalaureate as a Year 12 student at Victoria’s prestigious Ivanhoe Grammar School, Chad initially enrolled in Commerce and Arts at Melbourne University in 2002.
One year into his studies, he decided to take up the offer of a Dean’s Scholarship and transferred to Bond University to study Law and International Business.
Chad took full advantage of all the opportunities available to him here: In his second year of study, he spent one semester gaining practical experience as an intern at the Queensland Public Interest Law Clearing House, working pro bono on social justice cases; in his fourth year, he spent six months in the USA as an exchange student at the Duke University Law School; and he represented Bond in the Sir Harry Gibbs Constitutional Law Moot Competition (2004) and the William C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition (2007).
"I really appreciated the hands-on practical approach offered at Bond," says Chad.
"We were always encouraged to be innovative and individual in our approach to problem solving; to take risks and to think independently.
"I’ve also found that the diverse student population on campus has prepared me for interacting and working with people from all different countries and ethnic backgrounds."
Chad fielded a number of employment offers in his final year before deciding to accept the Defence Materiel Organisation’s graduate traineeship which now sees him dividing his time between Canberra and Melbourne.
