WHAT A WEIRD AMAZING RACE, THIS BONDY 500!

by Anna-Lee Bridgstock

While standing at Surfers Paradise bus depot on Sunday March 9, I realised that it was no ordinary day. While it's true that an 'ordinary' experience in Surfers is sometimes rather extraordinary, Sunday was a scene that would stop traffic and startle many in their paths.

Around the corner, through the car park and dodging a police car came a trail of dead brides, cannibals, 'hobos', pit stop workers and many other strange groups of young Bondies competing in the Bondy 500 this first trimester.

Highlights of the day: Starting at the eating challenge, the eager beavers chowed down on the rare delicacies of raw eggs, cooked liver, green spaghetti and - wait for it - Yogo and vegetables in a (clean) baby diaper.

  • Shout-outs go to The Pingers who swiped up a parking ticket….for parking on the wrong side of the road, facing the wrong way.
  • An honourable mention goes out to The Cannibals who had the police park them into their illegal park. Perhaps it was the fact they had the inconspicuous name, the ‘CANNIBALS’, written on their windshield....nothing sus.

The HSA judges were gobsmacked at the scavenger items that teams dug up (literally). A couple of our executive (who shall remain nameles - our President and Treasurer) were thrilled when a team found the never-before-seen episodes of Gossip Girl. However to their dismay, it was a blank CD with the episode titles written on it - ingenious.

I was impressed by the number of bags of dust that teams handed in! Simple minds, I guess.

The winners

Overall winners: Team Canta, known by the rest of the team as Team 11. Although they completed the final pool task second, this team proved that scavenger items can make all the difference. Team Canta took out the title of the overall Bondy 500 081 winners, with a whopping 985 out of 1000 possible scavenger points.

Overall runners-up: The Hobos aka Cezy, Troy, Ben Mack and Deb Horsley took out runners up with another whopping scavenger score, bumping their time down to second place.

Theme winners: The team Just Killed killed the opposition in the theme contest. Donned in wedding dresses, white makeup, teased hair and riding in a four-wheel drive dressed as a wedding car, Just Killed stole the show.

They also deserve a special mention for having the most inventive form of scavenger items: well done for your creativity!
